I start this blog out with mention of Dr. King because of some serious issues we have going on in our class. There is a lot of tearing down of one another's self-esteem with name calling, bullying, tricks, and fighting. I have started a self-esteem building program, and will be starting an empathy program as well called "Second Step." Our Principal is aware of these issues and has talked to the class a few times. This past week it has come to our attention that the class has been participating in a game called "Oreo," which involves the above behaviors. This game has been banned and consequences have been given out. Any other instances of these behaviors will call for a parent meeting. If you have any concerns you are welcome to contact me.
With that being said, we do have some other changes in our academics. This week we will start to read Because of Winn-Dixie. We will typically cover 3 chapters and then have a comprehension/vocab test. This week and next week will be our first 3 chapters, then expect to cover 3 chapters per week. This book will take us about 11 weeks to cover, taking us just past Spring Break, and around our SBAC testing blocks.
Our homework is changing as well. As I mentioned last week, I have added some grammar practice on Wednesdays. The reading log we have been using so far is done. Students will still be expected to read 20 minutes and log on a monthly sheet, please sign daily. In place of the reading long, students will be working on a Paragraph of the Week to help strengthen their writing. This is a program that is also used in 5th grade.
