This Tuesday is Back to School Night. This is a time for us to meet, for me to explain what is expected of the students this year, and answer any questions you may have. We ask that only parents come, but should you need to bring your child, a movie will be shown in the auditorium while us adults can talk. I look forward to meeting you all!
This past week was our first full week in third grade and filled with a lot of work. We started our first chapter in Math. Started learning the basics for our Language Arts program. Social Studies was filled with fun by making salt dough maps, and Science was kick started with a solar eclipse! This week is expected to be filled with the same amount of work. I will be adding Math to the homework load. A packet will be sent home Monday and is to be returned next Tuesday (due to Friday and Monday being no school). Students will be taking a Math test on Thursday.

This week is a big week! Not only is it our first full week and we are beginning our curriculum in almost all subjects, but it is also a solar eclipse event.
Being a NASA Explorer school, as well as a STEM Magnet, I think it is important to be involved in the eclipse. You should have received several phone calls and a letter explaining the event and the risks of exposure to the sun's rays without proper eye protection. I need all students to have written consent to be able to view the eclipse, a permission slip went home on Friday. I will provide glasses that were generously donated to those who have parent permission, those without permission will view the NASA footage inside a classroom. I have personally ensured that the glasses we have are NASA approved. If your child is participating you may want to apply sunscreen. This week I will be introducing parts of our ELA program, which will include Paragraph of the Week. This will eventually be done as homework. I will also be sending home the list of books students need to read this year. These books should be used for their daily reading log homework. I will go over the reading log in class, one section for each day, no particular order. In Math, we will begin our normal routine as a whole group. Students took an assessment to show what they remembered from 2nd grade. I will be using this information to put them into groups for small group Math lessons. I want to thank you for turning in all your paperwork and getting supplies in a timely manner. Now that the paperwork is finished I can concentrate on the real reason we are at Vintage, to learn! We officially have our first day of first grade under our belt. I have high hopes for the 2017-2018 school year. I was able to meet a few parents this morning, but plan to meet you all at Back to School Night on August 29. I have sent home some homework, but as you will find, most of it is for you to fill out. Please fill it in as much as possible, and let me know about your child and your family. Students have a Me Bag to complete, it is due Thursday morning. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns, or just to check in! [email protected]
