This week is a big week, we jump right in to all of the core subjects. In Language Arts we will begin reading our Core Literature book "Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher." We will be starting off with vocabulary from the story, which student need to study and know for a quiz on Friday. Students will also be starting Spelling words (short vowel sounds) and grammar (sentence types and nouns). All of these areas will be tested at the end of the week.
Math will be starting this week as well. This year, LAUSD has adopted and new curriculum and book that is better aligned with the CCSS (Common Core State Standards). Students books are consumable and contain their homework inside. We will tear it out in class to take home. There is a website that you can log on to to see the whole book, view videos that explain the lesson, and have access to a tutor and electronic manipulative/math aides to help with homework. Check out the Resources and Web Links tabs.
We will also be jumping in to a full homework schedule. There is Math, Spelling, and Reading homework each night. This should take students about and hour to and hour and a half to complete. If you have any concerns or questions, please email me and I will try to answer within an hour. Each day spelling asks student to do something different. I will explain how to do these in class, but I will also put an example on the Homework tab.
I am also sending home a California State Project to be done at home. Students have 3 weeks to complete it, which means it can be done if they work on one part each night. Students may talk to me if they need supplies. Information can be found online or in a book.
Lastly, be sure to mark September 1st on your calendar. This will be Back-to-School Night where I can explain classroom policies and procedures and go over the 4th grade curriculum.
