We officially have our first day of first grade under our belt. I have high hopes for the 2017-2018 school year. I was able to meet a few parents this morning, but plan to meet you all at Back to School Night on August 29. I have sent home some homework, but as you will find, most of it is for you to fill out. Please fill it in as much as possible, and let me know about your child and your family. Students have a Me Bag to complete, it is due Thursday morning. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns, or just to check in! [email protected]

We are finally wrapping up the year. Our field trips were loads of fun, all of our lessons have been learned and tests are done and graded. Even homework is done! This week will be filled with all the little things that are required to finish out the year. This included celebrating our success!
Monday will be our last "normal" day. We will have our final lessons and collect educational materials. Tuesday will also continue with the same, however, after lunch we will have our final Awards Assembly, in class we will give out other awards as well. Wednesday is our day filled with fun. We will be watching the 5th grade culmination dress rehearsal in the morning. After recess is our Physical Fitness extravaganza, followed by the root beer float celebration at lunch. Parents are welcome to join us for any part of those two activities. Students can bring hats and sunscreen since we will be outside for a few hours. They may also want to bring a beach towel to sit on the grass during lunch. No other games or toys are allowed to be brought to school. On Thursday and Friday, students may bring games (no electronics) and movies that are rated G to share. Friday is a minimum day, with a 12:58 dismissal. At 1:00 you will officially have 5th graders! Report cards will go home the last day of school. If your child had an outstanding book/fee with the library, the report card will be held until it is resolved. If you are not present the final day, the report card will be mailed home. I encourage my students to at least keep reading over the summer. There are still all the suggestions on my resources tab to help with the summer slide. Thank you for a great 2016-2017 year. It was great working as a team to make these kids successful! I wish you all a great summer and an exciting 5th grade year. I am always available to my previous students and parents for questions, support, or just to visit, but next year you will find me in 3rd grade. I hope everyone got to spend time this long weekend with friends and family. We discussed in class the difference between Veteran's and Memorial Day.
We do have a test in Math on our last chapter, as well as Science on our final uint. Math will be on Tuesday and Science will be Wednesday. All make up tests and missing work must be turned in by Wednesday since I will be closing my grade book at the end of the day. Thursday we have our field trip to Leonis Adobe. I am hoping our class is as well behaved as they were at Peter Strauss Ranch last week, if not better. We will be busy on this trip, so wear comfortable clothes that are still dress code, a hat and tennis shoes. There is water available there, so no need to carry water bottles. Backpacks, money, and any electronics or toys will not be needed either. Sunscreen is highly suggested. Next week is our fun week. More information will be coming for our end of the year celebration. You can still sign up at http;//signup.com/go/aojxqb It was so nice to see all of you at Open House last week! I did tell some of you that I would post the videos of their commercials, but I'm having some technical difficulties and will try to get them up soon. This week we have our field trip to Peter Strauss Ranch on Thursday. Students need to be at school on time since we are loading the bus at 8:30. Sunscreen and hats are highly recommended, along with tennis shoes and normal school attire. Backpacks will not be needed, just lunch sacks. Cameras, cell phones, toys, or any other item that is not allowed as school are not allowed on the trip, if brought they will be confiscated.
Our end of the year plans have begun, we will be having a party with the rest of 4th grade on June 7th. If you would like to sign up to bring something you can at: http;//signup.com/go/aojxqb, letters will be coming home soon about our special plans. We do have 2 more tests coming up, both next week. On Monday we will have our Chapter 14 test in Math on Geometry. On Wednesday we will be taking the Life Science Unit test, study guides were gone over and sent home to study, but students can take home their books and notes as well. This week we start to have many of our end of the year activities. We still continue to work on our learning in all academic areas, but they are all starting to wrap up.
On Wednesday morning we will get to watch the BMX show from the candy sales. We will be out on the yard for about an hour. Weather forecast shows a drizzly morning, but it is still a good idea to wear sunscreen and bring a hat, just in case. Thursday is a minimum day, letting out at 12:58. That night is Open House. I hope you can come, even for a quick visit to see all we have been learning. I also hight suggest visiting the 5th grade rooms to see what your child will be working on and will be expected to produce next year. Friday we will get to do a walk through of the school to see what other grades and classes have done. We will also be getting our turn to go to the Book Fair, students may bring money to buy books on this day. Next week we will have our field trip, I will be letting parents know this week who will be chaperones for this trip. I will also be sending home the permission slips for our next trip this week. This week will mark one month left of school. We are starting to wrap up units and projects, with just a little left to do!
We continue out integrated unit in Language Arts and our writing as moved into opinion/persuasive. In Math we have a test on Tuesday on Area and Perimeter, before starting our last chapter on Geometery. Last, I wanted to thank you for all of the flowers, kind notes, pictures, treats, and gifts for teacher's appreciation week. It made my week brighter! This week are back to our normal schedule. We are still working on a few projects, but otherwise all of our academics are back into the schedule and routine. This includes homework.
We are beginning Chapter 13 in Math on Area and Perimeter. We are also back to working from our Treasures Anthology learning about habitats/ecosystems/biomes. We continue with writing with an opinion piece, and working on a fun figurative language project. (If you have a spare paper towel tube, I will need a few. Thanks!) This will be our last visit to the Science Lab this week. Students will be doing flower dissections. They will need to bring a flower to be able to participate. Roses, daisies, sunflowers, and carnations are not good flowers for this projects. Lillies and hibiscus work best. We are finally done with SBAC! Great job room 14 for working hard and getting to school on time! I know this is a late in the week post, but I've been sick. (Yes, again!?) Plus, there hasn't been much to report on. We have been working hard on the SBAC and doing some projects in between. I won't touch on those since they will be up for open house and don't want to spoil the surprise. This week I still need supermarket circulars for a project next week. Also low grade notices go home this Friday. Since I don't have much to say, lets get caught up on some pictures! Here are some from Science Lab making series and parallel circuits: Then they were working on creating food webs: We had a lot of fun dissecting owl pellets: Today we started terrariums: I do have a few of our last day in theatre class with Ms. Meza doing their final group presentations: Lastly I have a lot of the "behind the scenes" pictures of the filming and editing of their Gold Rush commercials. I am hoping to upload the finished product soon. But a sneak peek for now: If you happen to have any pictures from the holiday show or pumpkin math or costume parade, anything (especially from when I was on leave), I would love it if you could send it to me so that I can make a montage for Open House. Thanks!
I hope everyone had a relaxing Spring Break! It was needed for this last stretch until June.
This week, on Tuesday, we will begin our Math portion of the SBAC. Students may feel nervous about the test. Assure them they know what is on the test and have been practicing all year. They may also be a bit irritable at the end of the day. Allow for time to play, eat plenty of healthy snacks, and get plenty of rest. I am not giving any homework so that the class can prepare their minds at home. This week we start our next integrated unit (joining Science and Language Arts). We will be working on a big project with biomes and adaptation. Most work will be done at school, but students may need to finish at home if they fall behind. We will be working on our last Informative Writing piece before we move on to Opinion. This week we will get to dissect owl pellets to better understand the food chain/web. We will get a short time at the library at the end of the day on Thursday. A few items for your attention:
This week will be a lot of review and wrapping up. Next week we have off for Spring Break, and when we return we will have the SBAC Math test. We are going to have our testing kick off on Wednesday. Wednesday will also be a workshop for the students for Science Projects. They will meet with others in the grade doing the same type of project so they will know exactly what is expected of them. We will be finishing up our Novel with a final test and writing task, and then get to watch the movie on Friday afternoon. Enjoy your Spring Break and be sure be at school on time starting Tuesday for the next 2 weeks, eat well, and sleep well!
