This past week in Math, we have been finishing up using fractions and mixed numbers to add, subtract, and multiply. We will be having a text on Chapter 9 on Tuesday. This Wednesday we will be taking a interim Performance Task test through the SBAC system. This is a type of practice test, but will still be scored. This means students need to take the test seriously and do their best. We will also be starting our next Chapter on decimals this week.
In Language Arts, we have been working on our novel, which the class seems to be enjoying. We are also starting to work on the writing process with Informative writing. Paragraphs of the Week are just as important, be sure your child is doing their best on these since they receive a grade each week. Also, encourage your child to use figurative language in their writing and speech. We have been working on different types each week.
We are nearing the end of our Physical Science Unit. The class will be taking a unit test in a few weeks, now is the time to start reviewing all we have learned with magnets and electricity. I will be sending home a review sheet soon.
In Social Studies, we have gotten through the Native Americans, Spanish rule, and Mexican Rule. We are now into our next big area of study: the Gold Rush, which brings us into California's statehood. As an integrated project for Social studies/theater/computer lab, the class will be creating commercials for inventions in the Gold Rush. This is a new project to 4th grade, and we are really looking forward to what the class will produce!
Finally, I spent my President's Day working on report cards. This means several things: 1) We only have 1 trimester left of the school year. 2) Any tests students take starting this week will go towards their final report card. 3) Conferences are just around the corner, be sure to sign up if you have not done so yet!
