- Monday we are having a Math test on Topics 3 and 4 (study guides went home over the weekend).
- Book Orders are due Monday, you may send me the order or go online.
- This is the last week to work on the California Native Plant Project, presentations begin next Monday, September 30.
- Please be sure your child is reading 20 minutes each day and marking it on their Reading Log. It is due next Tuesday, October 1.
- Our class is having trouble in Comprehension, so we are practicing it for homework every Tuesday. Be sure to go over this with your child. The returned homework has been unsatisfactory, and done hastily. Be sure to underline where the answer is found in the story.
We are now officially into Fall, and on our 7th week of school! This past week we have finished Topic 4 in Math, continued learning about seeds, had our second visit to the library, started another writing project, and had picture day. We also started a new unit in Social Studies, learning about the California Native Americans.
We rolled out the Breakfast in the Classroom program on Thursday. Everything went well, and students seem to be enjoying the food and the communal meal time in class. I have noticed that the class seems more focused in the morning, and in better spirits. We have not taken anything out of our instructional time, so this seems to be a good thing... so far. This past week the teachers were informed that the usual Periodic Assessments are changing and will be Common Core Standards aligned. This will affect the pacing and the program in Math only. I feel that it is a good change, allowing for us to master more and not have to cram in so many different concepts at once. We will be slowing down and bit and reviewing some of the Math concepts. This week, aside from the test, we will be reviewing Rounding, Expanded Form, Estimation, Addition, and Subtraction. Going home this week is a flyer asking for a $12 donation for field trip buses. It looks as though we will be going on two field trips this year. One will be to the UCLA Stunt Ranch, on October 24, where we will be learning about native plants and the Chumash tribe. The other trip will be to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Center sometime in the Spring. Another important paper going home this week are Low Grade Notices. You will receive a Low Grade Notice ONLY if your child is in danger of getting a 1 or 2 on the upcoming report card. These should not be a surprise as I have been sending home all test for you to review, as well as the Weekly Progress Reports. Finally, some points that you should be aware of:
