This week we start back into the full swing of things. We will be beginning our novel study on Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This week is a lot of setting up the story and pre-activities, we won't actually start reading until next week. That means that we will not be having any spelling or vocabulary, but in place of spelling homework, I am sending home a short research paper on a dog breed (any breed) to write a paragraph on.
In Math, we will not have time for review of long multiplication or division. We did a lot of support and review before the break, so we will be moving on to patterns in numbers, followed by fractions. We will also begin Electricity in Science, and move on to Mexican California in Social Studies.
As we discussed in our conferences, we will be taking the Middle of Year (MOY) assessment for reading. This is the tiered reading test called TRC, which takes the place of DIBELS. Those who are part of the ELD program will also be assessed in DIBELS.
I know that we are starting of in full swing of things, however we have the SBAC coming in April, and the students need to be prepared for 5th grade as well. I know that they are just finishing a book report, have a short report to work on this week, and I added Grammar WS on Wednesday for homework. Expectations will be getting higher, and students will be working on mastering more standards. This means that homework will be starting to change, with more practice in writing.
Remember I am an email away for help, clarification, and support. My motive is to be sure your child succeeds and feels comfortable using their knowledge and skills.
