We have started learning the multiplication facts for 0,1,2,5, and 9. Be sure to start working with your child to memorize these facts. This week there will be a worksheet sent home for homework for lesson 7-5A. With the change over to the new Common Core standards, our Math program has shifted a bit. Some lessons have been taken out, and others added to the curriculum. You can see these changes if you check out the Envision web page.
This past Friday, we were able to get up close and personal with our crayfish, Mike, and a few of his friends in Science Lab. We have finished learning about plants and will be testing on Thursday. This Friday, we will continue with the new topic of animal adaptations.
In Computer Lab, we wrote diamanté poems and started to use word processing to type them out. I am impressed that most of the class is beginning to hold their hands at the home row. Typing is important for third grade to work on since the new state test will require students to type responses to questions. You will find a link to a typing practice website on the links page, or you can check out some of the others on the Vintage website.
This Wednesday will be our PTA Restaurant Fundraiser Night at Islands in Porter Ranch from 5 to 9 pm. Then, on Saturday, October 19, the school will be holding its Beautification Day. If you can support our school by attending one or both of these events, it wold be a great help.
The Great Shake will be taking place on Thursday between recess and lunch. This is when the city practices the procedures put in place for an earthquake/natural disaster. We will be outside for an extended period. Please send your child to school wearing sunscreen and pants, as they will be sitting on the ground. This is a good time to discuss your family's procedures for emergencies.
Lastly, I have had some inquiries about Halloween. We will not be having any type of celebration in class since it is a short day. If you would like to send non food item goodies for your child to pass out, you are more than welcome. If you want to send candy, please be aware that we have several students with food allergies. You may also send candy as a donation for the fall festival on October 26th.
